A sturdy backpack makes sure that the spine isn’t doing all the carrying. Go for lightweight ones, yet made of quality materials, and can carry different kinds of hiking necessities. For a day hike in normal weather conditions, a 30-pound backpack will do the job. A pair of outdoor shoes or sandals is a must-have, too. Nature can be tricky, and earing the right footwear can prevent one from slipping and tripping while hiking. Jim Feldkamp.

Insect repellants should be in every hiker’s backpack. Mountains are habitats for insects, and it’s best to be safe than sorry. Sunscreen, meanwhile, keeps one’s skin protected from the sun. It is also important to have a first aid kit ready in the bag in case of any emergency. Jim Feldkamp.

Water and snacks/b>. Bring a water bottle and a filter if possible. Grab calorie-dense snacks, and be sure to pack more than the expected. Even when hiking with a team, bring a navigation tool, be it a map of the area or an electronic navigation device. The key to having a successful hike is to have a good plan. Jim Feldkamp.
